  1. The goal of my social comment picture was to show some of the effects of the oil boom on Eastern Montana and Western North Dakota. The oil boom has been creating prosperity for some, but on the other side, many people are struggling with this boom. As the pictures shows, the oil boom could be helpful, bringing in money for local businesses and farmers, helping them buy new equipment. The oil boom could also bring in big businesses such as Walmart, but this will drive local business out of business. The farmers are selling land to these companies, but this means they are losing valuable farm land. They are also losing farm hands, because they are unable to pay them as much as the big oil companies are able to pay them. The oil companies could also have negative effects on the environment in these areas.
I wanted this picture to show the good and bad sides of the local oil boom. The good side is that the oil is bringing in lots of money to the area, which the farmers could use for new equipment, but these same farmers are also losing important things like land and helpers. I also wanted the picture to represent how this oil boom could be changing our way of life. The old tractor could represent the peace and happiness we now find in this area. This peace could be disrupted and tossed aside by all the people who will now flock to this area.
My process of capturing this picture was quite simple. I drove around the countryside until I found an oil well I could photograph. I was fortunate in the fact that there was an old tractor discarded in the field. I thought this was a good representation of the point I was trying to make. I believe I was successful in representing the point about the good and bad issues the oil boom can bring to the area.
